U.S. video game sales up 4 pct in December

Sales of video game equipment and software in the United States rose 4 percent in December to $5.5 billion, industry tracker NPD said on Thursday, as the industry closed out a difficult year on an upbeat note.

Strength in the month came from hardware sales, which rose 16 percent, even as software sales fell 7 percent.

Nintendo Co Ltd's (7974.OS) Wii sold 3.8 million units in the month and set a record for monthly game system sales in the U.S., the company said.

Sony Corp's (6758.T) PlayStation 3 was No. 2 with 1.36 million units, followed closely by Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O) Xbox 360 at 1.31 million, according to NPD.

Nintendo's "New Super Mario Bros" was the top-selling console and portable game.

Overall for 2009, U.S. retail sales of video game hardware, software and accessories fell 8 percent to $19.7 billion
